Breast Surgery

A breast lift changes breast shape and position. Breast augmentation adds volume using implants or, in selected cases, your own fat. If you want more fullness and also have significant sagging, a lift with augmentation may be appropriate. The choice depends on your anatomy, your goals and the tradeoffs you are comfortable accepting.

If your breasts have changed after pregnancy or weight loss, deciding what you want to change can be difficult. You may miss their previous fullness, feel uncomfortable with their position, or want a different shape without becoming larger.

I would start with the change that matters to you: more volume, a higher position, or both. That gives our consultation a clearer direction than choosing an implant size first.

What is the difference between a breast lift and implants?

The procedures address different aspects of breast appearance. This comparison is a starting point for discussion; it cannot establish which operation is suitable for you.

Breast lift, or mastopexy

A breast lift reshapes the breast and raises its position. It does not substantially increase breast volume and involves lift scars.

Breast augmentation with implants

Implants add fullness and projection. They do not correct significant sagging on their own and require ongoing implant care.

Breast lift with implants

A lift with implants addresses sagging and adds volume. It combines the considerations of a lift and implant surgery.

When might breast augmentation alone be enough?

Breast augmentation may be appropriate when your main concern is limited volume or lost fullness. Implants can increase breast size and projection, but they cannot reliably correct severely drooping breasts.

At your assessment, the position of the nipples, skin quality, breast shape and your desired change all matter. An implant brand or a photograph cannot answer those questions on its own.

You can explore the procedure on my breast augmentation in Abu Dhabi page. If you are researching a particular approach, my Motiva Preservé article covers that topic separately. First, establish whether your goals call for augmentation, a lift, or a combination.

When is a breast lift more relevant?

A lift may be worth discussing when you are unhappy with sagging, an elongated breast shape, downward-pointing nipples or stretched skin. A nipple that sits below the breast crease when unsupported is one finding a surgeon considers. It is not a stand-alone test that determines your treatment. General health, weight stability and smoking status also influence suitability.

You can have a breast lift without implants. If you are comfortable with your existing volume, reshaping your own tissue may address your main concern. However, a lift does not provide the same increase in size or upper-breast fullness as augmentation.

If you want smaller breasts as well as a lifted shape, breast reduction may be more relevant to discuss. My breast lift page explains lifting in more detail.

When would you consider a breast lift with implants?

A combined procedure may be considered when you want additional volume as well as correction of sagging. The lift and implant each serve a purpose. Some people can have both procedures together; others may need separate operations.

Before choosing either route, ask your surgeon to explain what each part of the plan contributes. You should understand the proposed scars, the expected change in fullness, the risks and why a combined or staged approach is being recommended. A useful consultation gives you enough information to weigh those choices, including choosing to wait.

Consultation guide: volume may prompt augmentation, position or shape a lift, and volume with sagging a lift with augmentation. Individual assessment is required.

Start with the change you would like to discuss. Your anatomy, goals and preferences guide the choice.

Could fat transfer be an alternative to implants?

Fat transfer uses fat collected by liposuction from another area of your body. It may be an option if you want a relatively modest increase in breast volume. It is an augmentation technique; whether a separate lift is needed still requires assessment.

Fat transfer has its own limitations and risks, including cysts, infection, calcification and fat necrosis, where some transferred fat cells do not survive. Additional treatment may be needed. Using your own tissue does not remove the need to discuss surgical risks.

Read more about fat transfer before discussing whether it fits your goals.

What scars and risks should you weigh?

A breast lift involves permanent scars. Depending on your anatomy and the correction required, the incision may run around the areola, continue vertically to the breast crease, or also extend along that crease. Scars often fade, but the appropriate pattern depends on the breast shape, skin and amount of sagging. Ask to see where your proposed scars would sit.

Lift risks include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, asymmetry, altered nipple or breast sensation and possible revision surgery. There are also anaesthetic and clotting risks, and a risk of partial or total loss of the nipple and areola. Your own risk assessment matters more than a general promise about recovery or results.

Implants introduce additional considerations, including rupture, capsular contracture, which is tightening of scar tissue around the implant, and possible further operations. They are not lifetime devices. Discuss follow-up, appropriate imaging and the full device-specific risk information, including breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL.

How should you plan recovery around work and family?

Plan your recovery around the operation you are actually having and the activities your day involves. Ask for separate guidance on returning to work, driving, lifting children, exercising and attending follow-up appointments.

Time away from work is not the same as full recovery. A return-to-work estimate should not be treated as permission to resume every activity. After a lift, you will receive instructions about wound care, support garments, medication, warning signs and follow-up. Your surgeon should explain when specific activities can resume.

Before arranging leave or childcare, describe the physical demands of your job and home routine.

Questions to bring to your consultation

Should I wait until after pregnancy or weight loss?

Discuss future pregnancy and substantial planned weight loss before scheduling surgery. Both can change breast shape and affect a lift result. Breast appearance also continues to change with ageing. Timing should form part of your plan, especially if your weight is still changing or another pregnancy is likely soon.

What should I bring to a breast surgery consultation?

Bring a list of medications and supplements, details of previous operations, relevant medical history and any existing breast imaging or biopsy reports. Be ready to discuss your goals, smoking and family history of breast cancer. You can also write down which changes you would welcome and which tradeoffs concern you most.

Will I still be able to breastfeed after implants?

Some women can breastfeed after augmentation and others cannot, so breastfeeding cannot be guaranteed. If future breastfeeding matters to you, discuss this before choosing an operation.

How much does a breast lift with implants cost in Abu Dhabi?

Ask for an individual written quotation after assessment. Confirm whether it includes the surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital, implants if used, tests, garments and follow-up, and ask how additional care or revision would be charged. A meaningful comparison needs both the proposed operation and its inclusions.
