Your questions, answered.
What can liposuction change?
Liposuction removes selected fat deposits beneath the skin to change body contour. It does not remove visceral fat around internal organs and is not a treatment for obesity. The areas and amount of treatment should be selected after an assessment of your anatomy, health and goals.
Skin quality and alternatives
Skin elasticity affects how the area looks after fat removal. Liposuction does not remove excess skin or reliably correct cellulite. If loose abdominal skin is a main concern, a tummy tuck or another approach may be more suitable. Additional fat removal is not a substitute for assessing skin laxity.
Understanding ultrasound terminology
Dr. Bravo’s Ultra SAFE Liposuction combines ultrasound guidance with the SAFE liposuction protocol: Separation, Aspiration and Fat Equalization. He uses ultrasound imaging to help show anatomy and instrument position during liposuction. The three-stage SAFE protocol is described in a peer-reviewed paper by Simeon H. Wall Jr and Michael R. Lee. Ultrasound imaging is different from ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which uses ultrasound energy to treat fat before removal.
Imaging does not guarantee avoidance of injury or a perfectly even contour. If fat transfer is also planned, its injection technique and additional risks need a separate discussion.
Risks and limitations
Possible complications include uneven contour, loose skin, fluid collection, infection, sensation changes, poor healing and the need for revision. More serious risks include injury to deeper structures, blood clots and anesthesia complications. Energy-assisted techniques can have additional risks, including heat injury. Your surgeon should explain the risks relevant to the areas, extent and techniques proposed.
Recovery planning
Time away from work and exercise depends on the areas treated, any combined surgery, your activities and your healing. Bruising and swelling may continue after you feel ready for lighter activities. Garment use, wound care and activity restrictions should follow your individual instructions and follow-up assessment.
Your consultation
Discuss what can reasonably change, what may remain, the alternatives and the practical support you will need. Ask for a written quote that identifies the planned areas, procedures and included care. No specific shape or recovery date can be guaranteed.
